Beachside 401 at a glance
What: An all-new, three-day Beachside Writers Workshop with founder Bob Welch and his guest, novelist Jane Kirkpatrick.
Who: A maximum of 50 writers. Workshop is designed for, but not limited to, those who have taken one of Bob and Jane’s 301 sessions.
When: Friday evening, Feb. 19, 2010, through 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010.
Where: Yachats Commons, Yachats, Ore., on the central Oregon coast.
Why: To stretch you as a writer, go more deeply into fiction and non-fiction techniques and build your confidence.

FRIDAY/FEB. 19
6:30 p.m. — Registration, munch, settle in.
7:00 p.m. — Session 1: Opening inspiration from Jane & Bob: What We’ve Learned Since We Last Met.
8:15 p.m. — Session 2:
Writing time.
9:15 p.m. — Campfire s’mores!
SATURDAY/FEB. 20
8 a.m. — Coffee. 8:30 a.m. — Light breakfast. 9 a.m. — Session 3. Welch workshop: “Mining Your Life”: Making memoir writing meaningful.” Kirkpatrick workshop: “Four Threads for a Tight Weave”: How to weave plot and character with the four other essential threads of a story: landscape, relationship, spirituality and work..
10:15 a.m. — 15-minute break.
10:30 a.m. — Session 4: Welch workshop: Painting with words. Kirkpatrick workshop:” But that’s so interesting! I just wish I could use it!” The vagaries of research, including managing details, taking side trips, interviewing ,staying on track and letting that really wonderful piece of trivia go.
11:45 a.m. — Session 5: Groups on challenges of writing.
12:30 a.m. — Oregon Coast Lunch, free time. 1:45 p.m. — Session 6:
Writing: Fun, fun, fun till daddy took your thesaurus away. (A whimsical exercise.)
2:30 p.m. — 15-minutes break.
2:45 p.m. — Session 7: Putting pen to paper.
4 p.m. — Free time, dinner on your own.
7:30 p.m. — Reading from your work. (Optional.)
9:30 p.m. — End of day
SUNDAY/FEB. 21
8 a.m. — Coffee.
8:30 a.m. — Session 8.
Welch workshop: Memoir writing. Kirkpatrick workshop (Repeat of one of three workshops, TBA)
9:45 a.m. — Brunch.
10:30 a.m. — Session 9: Welch: How to Use Humor, Especially in Making a Serious Point. Kirkpatrick: “Advanced Mind-Mumbling” or “How We Writers Sabotage our Talents.” Discover insights about your talent and adopt strategies to keep mind-mumbling from getting in the way of your writing dream.
11:45 a.m. — Final thoughts & questions.
12:30 p.m. — The End.
