Pebble in the Water:
Why You Make Far More
of a Difference Than You Know

He bases the talk on Frances Slanger, a Polish Jewish immigrant who wrote a stirring letter to American GIs from her field hospital tent in World War II, sent it to the Stars and Stripes newspaper and was killed the next night in an artillery barrage. The soldiers were so moved by her letter, which was printed by editors not knowing she had died, that they insisted something be done to honor her. In the end, that happened: the finest hospital ship in the fleet was named in her honor.
Slanger was a woman who grew up with every disadvantage, not the least of which was having so few people who believed in her, but in the end was honored among thousands of GIs for restoring them with hope in their darkest hours of the war.
Welch uses many of Slanger’s attributes to remind people in the healthcare profession how to treat patients; for example, Slanger immediately showed her patients she cared; she instilled them with hope; she took care of their needs; she showed them respect; and she worked as a team player to get them to others who could help. (When time allows, Welch shows a 12-minute inspirational DVD on Slanger that landed him and the book spots on ABC’s Good Morning America.)
Particularly good audiences:
Hard-working nurses, nurse practitioners and lab personnel who can feel neglected or like their jobs aren’t really counting for much. In other words, just about anyone. Has also moved doctors to tears.
